CNN —AS Roma has announced that José Mourinho and his coaching staff have left the Serie A club with “immediate effect.”The 60-year-old Mourinho was appointed Roma coach in May 2021 and guided the Italian team to a Europa Conference League final win a year later. Last year, Roma and Mourinho also reached the Europa League final but lost on penalties to Sevilla. Beaten 3-1 by AC Milan on Sunday, Roma is ninth in the Serie A table. He has also won two Champions Leagues, a Europa League and a UEFA Cup. The role at Roma was the second time Mourinho had worked in Italy.

Mourinho was in his third season at Roma and his contract was due to expire in June. However, after the game Mourinho said he “didn’t know why” he was shown a red card. “I only made a gesture to the bench, not a single word,” Mourinho said, per Reuters. In stoppage time, Mourinho could be seen mimicking someone crying in a gesture made in the direction of the Monza bench. The Roma manager was sent off three times in Serie A last season.

Mourinho will miss his team’s Serie A season opener due to the suspension and was also given a 50,000 euros ($54,610) fine for comments made towards referee Daniele Chiffi, the Italian FA said. “I stopped working (talking) 20-30 minutes from the end because I knew he would give me a red card for anything. I didn’t give him the opportunity, I decided no, that’s enough,” said Mourinho. Roma have also been fined 50,000 euros, on top of the 55,000 euro fine that UEFA also imposed on the club.
